Treaties in Canada provide a framework for sharing and co-existing on the traditional lands of First Nation, Métis and Inuit Peoples. Throughout Canadian history, treaties forged early partnerships between Indigenous Peoples and colonial government, and also played a part in the creation of trade and military alliances. Apart from their historical context, treaties have a pivotal role in shaping relationships between the Government of Canada, Indigenous groups, and provinces and territories, and they are a vital element to reconciliation.

Located in the heart of The Forks, the Agowiidiwinan Centre invites visitors to delve into Indigenous history and the Numbered Treaties. The Centre is steps away from the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers, historically where Indigenous People traded and resided over 6,000 years ago. In the Centre, guests can expand their knowledge about treaties and their impact on Canada’s cultural and legal landscape through an array of interactive tools, visual panels and special educational events.

The Centre is a fully self-guided experience and visitors are invited to “follow the river” from one panel to the next, as indicated by the winding blue pattern on the floor. Guests can learn about treaties, with each display featuring an educational topic, while digital panels complement with audio and video to enhance the learning experience.

Each panel features a learning topic with a short description, followed by one or more QR codes, providing access to resources, maps and interesting articles. Visitors can look through these resources to supplement material on each of the panels.

Admission to the Agowiidiwinan Centre is free. Located at 15 Forks Market Road near The Forks Market Plaza. The Agowiidiwinan Centre welcomes guests Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
